Essential oils are nature's medicine. They have been used for over 3,500 years worldwide for their therapeutic and healing properties. Once these oils and the plants they come from were standard tools physicians used to treat their patients prior to the institution of the pharmaceutical industry.
Natural remedies have been used in every culture, sometimes considered quackery or witchcraft. The trend of essential oils for health & wellness is a part of the re-emergence of natural remedies. Many people use them every day to maintain their health, physically, mentally and emotionally. They can be used to assist the body to heal and have proven to be very effective. Daily we see more research that supports what many have experienced that essential oils are a safe and effective way to treat everything from common cold, to severe infections, headaches, hormonal imbalance, mental disorders and so much more.
As nurses, part of our role is to constantly stay informed of new therapies and essential oils are becoming more and more popular. Educating yourself to the benefits of essential oils is as important as every other form of new treatments. The world of natural medicine is no longer considered alternative but rather complementary. I believe that exploring the world of essential oils will open your mind to new possibilities and you will find it very intriguing.
