An online continuing education course for nurses, medical health care professionals, and other interested individuals.

This instructional course is designed for nurses, social workers, and those providing pastoral services to culturally diverse individuals who are experiencing an illness. Those who are providing spiritual care and support have a responsibility to develop competencies that respond to the concerns and distresses expressed in uniquely spiritual and cultural ways by the person and significant others during an illness event. Therefore, the course is designed to assist health care professionals develop competencies to ensure the emotional, cultural, and spiritual needs of the person and significant others’ needs are met.


At the completion of the course, the health care professional will be able to:
  1. Describe the term “web of meaning.”
  2. Restate the five (5) steps to ensure spiritual cultural competency.
  3. Summarize the importance of cultural diversity relevant to spirituality.
  4. Examine the process of becoming multiculturally competent. 
  5. Utilize the strategies and tools used to assist the health care professional in acquiring spiritual and cultural competency.
  6. Analyze the obstacles to incorporating multiculturalism and interfaith perspectives and propose strategies to prevent these obstacles into their own professional practice.
  7. Integrate strategies to obtain spiritual/cultural competency.
